The park has been part of London’s landscape for centuries. Originally marshland, it was turned into a hunting ground by Henry VIII in the 1500s before being reshaped by King Charles II in the 1660s. Inspired by the formal gardens he had admired in France, he introduced tree-lined avenues, a lake, and even exotic animals. At one point, camels, crocodiles, and an elephant wandered the grounds—an odd sight compared to the swans, ducks, and squirrels that call it home today. The park is also known for its pelicans, a tradition that started in 1664 when the Russian ambassador gifted them to the king. Over 350 years later, they’re still here, often gathering near the lake or perching unexpectedly on benches.
Walking through, the Blue Bridge is an essential stop. It offers one of the best views in the city, with Buckingham Palace framed on one side and the London Eye and Horse Guards Parade stretching out on the other. Early mornings bring a quiet stillness, while late afternoons offer a warm, golden light that reflects beautifully off the water.
