12. City Markets and museums
The city has a diverse offering of restaurants, from street food to high-end dining and so much in between. My observation is that the food scene is predominantly Mexican. However, there is still a lot of variety here, from traditional to modern to fusion. While Mexican food seems to prevail, there are many other cuisines that are present as well, especially Italian, Japanese, Asian fusion, and American. City markets.
There’s is simply something magical about Puebla that pulls you in from the moment you arrive. I was shocked by how hypnotized I was by the experience. As I meandered through the city, I felt wrapped in beauty, charm, and love, with brightly painted facades and intricate tiles shining in the sunlight. Every turn revealed another charming corner—a hidden courtyard filled with flowers, a quiet café with the aroma of fresh coffee and sweets, or a lively plaza where children played, and couples shared laughter.
But it’s not just the city’s beauty that leaves an impression—it’s the people. There’s a warmth to them, a pride in their heritage that shines through in every interaction. From the friendly street vendors and their Carne Asada and Chalupa’s to the artisans meticulously painting Talavera tiles, you can feel their deep connection to the place they call home.
The surrounding landscapes are equally breathtaking. Majestic volcanoes surround the city, their peaks often cloaked in clouds or covered in snow, adding a sense of mystery, beauty, and awe to the horizon. It takes you to another world, especially being from the Midwest/US. On a clear day, you can spot Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in the distance, standing watch over Puebla like ancient guardians sending up smoke Signals to the Gods in a mysterious language of secrets.
And then there’s the rhythm of life here—vibrant, timeless, and unhurried. Time seems to slow as you savor a meal at a rooftop restaurant, the city unfolding below you like a story waiting to be told. There is unending beauty in Puebla, a feeling that the city itself is alive, breathing, and welcoming you to become a part of its tale. I hear it calling me back to its heart, and I haven’t even boarded the plane yet.
