Montreux: Calm, Refined, and Beautifully Unexpected
Before I even stepped off the train, I could feel it—Montreux has a calm, elegant energy that’s hard to explain until you’re here. I came with no expectations, just curiosity, and found myself surrounded by snow-dusted peaks, glassy lake views, and a vibe that feels effortlessly refined.
I just arrived in Montreux and whoa. It took my breath away. It’s magical… like a postcard.
10 Things to Know Before You Go
Montreux is one of those places that surprises you with its elegance and ease. Here are 10 things to know before you go:
Lake Geneva is the star. The views are unreal—mountains rising from the water, sailboats gliding by, and sunsets that feel painted.
The Montreux Jazz Festival is legendary. Every July, world-class artists and unexpected street performers take over the city.
It feels like the Riviera. Thanks to a warm microclimate, palm trees and flower beds thrive here year-round.
Château de Chillon is postcard-perfect. This medieval lakeside castle is one of the most photographed spots in Switzerland.
The promenade is magic. Walk it. Run it. Sit and eat ice cream on it. Every step is lined with flowers and mountain views.
You’re in wine country. The Lavaux Vineyards are a short ride away, with terraced hills and world-class Swiss whites.
Freddie Mercury loved it here. There’s a statue in his honor by the lake—and Queen recorded several albums nearby.
Take the train to Rochers-de-Naye. From the top, you’ll see the entire lake, the Alps, and maybe even marmots.
French is spoken, but you’ll be fine in English. Locals are used to visitors and usually switch without a fuss.
It’s not cheap. This is polished Switzerland—beautiful, clean, and pricey. Plan your meals and train rides accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Now that I’ve spent a bit of time here, I can see why people talk about Montreux the way they do. It’s calm, beautiful, and kind of unexpected. I’m glad I came—and if I ever end up back in Switzerland, I wouldn’t mind passing through again.

Food
Pequod’s Pizza in Chicago delivers a deep-dish experience that stands out for all the right reasons. The butter crust is thick and chewy, with a caramelized outer edge that’s packed with flavor and texture.
Pizza Amici delivered one of the best thin crust pizzas I’ve had in a long time. The crust was exactly how it should be—ultra-thin, but not cracker-crispy or floppy…
