Steak Frites Surprise at L’Atelier in Paris

I didn’t expect one of the best steak frites I’ve had in Paris to come from a €19.90 lunch menu—but L’Atelier proved me wrong.

The steak arrived already sliced, perfectly cooked to a tender medium-rare, and swimming in a rich green sauce that leaned into buttery béarnaise territory, but with more complexity—herbaceous, tarragon, maybe something even brighter as well. Whatever it was, it worked. I dragged each bite through that sauce like it was gold, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

And the frites? Crisp to the last one. Golden, piping hot, and seasoned just right. They didn’t need anything extra—not ketchup, not mayo. Just frites the way they’re supposed to be. But I admit any extra sauce in the plates was scooped up by the fries!

The salad was fresh and simple: oak leaf lettuce, thinly sliced radishes, walnuts, and a house vinaigrette that clung lightly to every leaf. A slice of crusty bread on the side gave it that satisfying crunch I always look for. Nothing fancy, but perfectly done. It didn’t try too hard—and that’s what made it so good.

The space feels relaxed but sharp. Green walls, natural light, vintage café chairs. It’s clean and modern with nods to the past. The service was attentive but not overbearing, and the whole lunch felt unrushed and comfortable.

For under twenty euros, this was a complete meal that felt like a treat. No gimmicks. No fluff. Just quality ingredients, proper execution, and a price that makes you wonder how they pull it off.

I’d go back in a heartbeat—and next time, I might not even look at the menu. I’ll just say: “Steak frites, please.
