A Must-Visit Castle on Lake Geneva

A Lakeside Dream Come to Life

Just outside Montreux, right along the water’s edge, Château de Chillon rises up like something out of a dream. Surrounded by Lake Geneva on three sides and framed by the Alps, it’s one of the most scenic and memorable spots in Switzerland.

Getting here is easy. From Montreux, take the train one stop to Veytaux-Chillon. Go downstairs to platform three and follow the signs. Within five minutes, you’re walking along a flower-lined path with the lake glimmering beside you. It’s a peaceful and scenic approach. You can also walk from Montreux along the promenade, which takes about 45 minutes and offers nonstop beauty the entire way.

The first view of the castle is breathtaking. Built directly on a small rocky island, the castle has stood here for more than 800 years. It was never destroyed, which means much of what you see is original. You can walk through vaulted stone halls, explore the old prison cells carved into the bedrock, and climb the lookout tower for sweeping views of the lake and mountains. There are murals inside the chapel, open courtyards, banquet rooms, and historic artifacts scattered throughout.

One of the most surprising parts was standing in the same cell that inspired Lord Byron’s famous poem, The Prisoner of Chillon. He actually carved his name into one of the pillars. That little moment of history caught me off guard—in the best way.

There’s something powerful about how quiet it is inside. You hear the echo of your own steps. You look out through narrow archer windows and see the clear blue of Lake Geneva stretching into the distance. Every room feels preserved, almost untouched.

The walk along the lake to the castle is also part of the experience. Flower beds spill over with color. Palm trees and fountains line the way. You pass small cafés, benches for resting, and photo-worthy views in every direction. If you have time, you can keep going past the castle and hop on a boat for a ride across the lake. Or head up into the mountains to Rochers-de-Naye by cogwheel train.

Montreux itself is full of charm in late spring. The promenade is bursting with blooms, and the mild Mediterranean climate makes everything feel alive. We grabbed ice cream, crêpes, and glasses of local rosé before or after our castle visit depending on the day. It’s all close together, all easy to enjoy.

Château de Chillon is a perfect stop for anyone visiting the Montreux region. Whether you’re into castles, lake views, or relaxing walks, this one checks every box. I’ve been to castles before, but this one had something different. Maybe it’s the water. Maybe it’s the light. Either way, it left an impression I won’t forget. For travelers planning a visit to Château de Chillon, it’s worth noting this destination ranks among the best day trips from Montreux and top historical landmarks in Switzerland. Its lakeside setting and well-preserved architecture make it ideal for photography, cultural exploration, and romantic getaways. Visitors often search for “things to do in Montreux,” “best castles in Switzerland,” or “Lake Geneva attractions,” and Château de Chillon consistently tops the list. To make the most of your trip, consider arriving early to avoid crowds and capture the best light. Whether you’re here for history, nature, or a scenic escape, this castle delivers on every front.
