Bismarck, ND

A Hidden Midwest Gem in the Heart of the Northern Plains

Nestled along the banks of the Missouri River, Bismarck, North Dakota, is a city that often flies under the radar for travelers exploring the Midwest. The original OG travelers, Lewis and Clark, stopped here, and now this charming capital city offers a unique blend of history, culture, outdoor adventure, and warm Midwestern hospitality that makes it a worthy destination for anyone looking to explore a less-traveled path. Two of our sons decided to go to school here, at the University of Bismarck, and after visiting repeatedly, you were consistently surprised with what Bismarck had to offer. One major surprise was the food scene.

Before we explore the food scene, Bismarck’s rich history and culture are important to highlight for any would-be traveler. Bismarck comes on the radar back in when it was officially founded. The city played a significant role during the westward expansion of the United States and was a hub for pioneers, Native Americans, and fur traders. Visitors can delve into this rich past by visiting the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, which showcases exhibits that depict the state’s history, culture, and natural history. The museum features everything from prehistoric fossils to the state’s role in World War II.

For those interested in Native American culture, Bismarck is close to several tribal communities. The nearby Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park offers historical sites such as the reconstructed military post and the On-A-Slant Village, which provides insight into the life of the Mandan people. Programs and events often highlight traditional crafts, storytelling, and Native American history.

For our family, we were struck by the stunning natural beauty in Bismarck and the surrounding area, making it a perfect hub to explore or use as a main stop for your longer journey. Nature lovers will find plenty to admire in and around Bismarck. The city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes that offer various opportunities for outdoor activities. The Missouri River provides a picturesque backdrop for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. The river’s scenic trails are perfect for hiking and biking, with the Riverwalk offering a leisurely stroll along the waterway.

Just a short drive from Bismarck, you’ll discover the breathtaking Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I was simply overwhelmed with the beauty here at every stop. This stunning park is known for its rugged badlands, diverse wildlife, and picturesque landscapes that inspired the former president himself. Visitors can hike, bike, or drive through the park to take in the stunning views and observe bison, elk, birds, and prairie dogs in their natural habitat. You would definitely want to plan a minimum of half a day, if not a full day, of adventuring here, to take it all in. Unfortunately, this top was on our way out to Glacier, and we only had an hour here, so we can’t wait to go back.

Another surprise is that Bismarck has A Vibrant Arts Scene. Bismarck is home to a thriving arts community that showcases local talent and provides cultural enrichment. The Bismarck Arts & Galleries Association hosts numerous art exhibits, and the city is dotted with galleries featuring works by local artists. The Belle Mehus Auditorium is another cultural hub, hosting various performances, including concerts, theater productions, and dance recitals. For those who appreciate the performing arts, the Dakota Stage Ltd. offers a range of performances throughout the year, including plays and musicals, making it a great way to experience local talent and creativity. In addition, the city often hosts festivals celebrating arts, music, and culture, providing visitors with a taste of Bismarck’s unique character.

Bismarck has an array of family-friendly activities. It is an excellent destination for families, offering various activities catering to visitors of all ages. The Dakota Zoo, located along the Missouri River, is a delightful place for children to learn about animals and conservation. With over 600 animals representing more than 100 species, it’s a great way to spend a day outdoors with the family.

Additionally, the city boasts numerous parks and recreational facilities, including the famous Sertoma Park, which features playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails.

But truly, I want to highlight that my foodie friends will not be disappointed because it is a city filled with culinary delights. Foodies, food fans, and food enthusiasts will find that Bismarck offers a diverse culinary scene that reflects the region’s agricultural roots. From farm-to-table dining experiences to local breweries, the city has something to satisfy every palate. Try classic Midwestern fare at one of the local diners or sample the innovative dishes at upscale restaurants that focus on locally sourced ingredients. Our favorites so far are Butterhorn (get reservations), la Enchiladas, Clay Oven Indian cuisine, the Brick oven bakery, Anima Cucina, and many other honorable mentions. Yes, we love to eat out!

If you visit July through October, Don’t miss the opportunity to visit a local farmers’ market, where you can taste fresh produce, homemade goods, and unique products crafted by local artisans. It’s a fantastic way to experience the local culture and support the community.

One of Bismarck’s most endearing qualities is its residents’ warmth and friendliness. The Midwestern hospitality is palpable, and visitors often leave with a sense of connection to the community. We experienced this at Butterhorn and at La Enchilada, where we were treated as family. We got to know the owners and servers who went out of their way to make us feel at home. Whether exploring the city, enjoying a meal, or participating in local events, you’ll find that the people of Bismarck are eager to share their stories and make you feel at home.
Bismarck, North Dakota, may not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a trip, but it is undoubtedly a hidden gem offering diverse experiences. If you’re coming from the east and driving out west to Glacier, you definitely want to stop here for a day or two along the way. From its rich history and vibrant arts scene to stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality, Bismarck has something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or a peaceful retreat, this charming city is well worth visiting. So pack your bags and explore all that Bismarck has to offer—you won’t be disappointed!
